Before space exploration, Mars was considered the hottest candidate for hosting extraterrestrial life. Astronomers thought they saw criss-cross straight lines on its surface. As a result, people thought they were irrigation channels designed by intelligent beings. 1938, when Orson Welles a radio play based on the science fiction classic War of the Worlds (World War II) by H.G. Wells, enough people believed in the story of an invasion of Mars, almost causing panic.Another reason for science to expect life on Mars is the seasonal color changes that appear on the surface. This phenomenon led to the speculation that the conditions during the warm season favor a flowering of the vegetation and let it rest during the cold period.(Http://solarviews.com/germ/mars.htm)
