Every year in the fall, the return of wild geese in the Rhine lowlands is repeated, because the animals find here mild temperatures, trouble-free food areas and a rich offer of sleep water. From the beginning of November to the end of February, up to 180,000 Arctic geese - mainly pollinating and seed geese - spend the winter in the area between Duisburg and Nijmegen. In the Düffel alone, between December and January, up to 50,000 of the Nordic guests arrive during the main season. But even rarer species such as white-cheeked geese occasionally mingle with the feather folk. No fewer than 14 species of geese and demergings have been observed in bus excursions over the last few years.
