Notre-Dame de la Gorge

The original Church of Notre Dame de la Gorge was built in the 13th century. Painted in pink, this pretty building marked the entrance to the high mountain. The travelers of old prayed here before leaving the valley that their journey would be safe.

The church was rebuilt in 1699. From the 13th century to the early 19th century, Notre Dame de la Gorge was the local parish church for the residents of the valley. It was also a spiritual sanctuary where the cult of Mary lived. Every year, since time immemorial, the pilgrimage on August 15th consumes the faithful in droves.

The date of the pilgrimage to this church dedicated to the Mother of God Mary under the title "Notre Dame" ("Our Lady"), which is widespread in French-speaking countries, August 15th, indicates the patron saint: In the (Catholic) church will celebrated the feast of the Assumption of Mary on this day.
