This meadow orchard is looked after by the environmental office of the city of Dortmund. There are sweet cherry, apple and walnut trees on around 2.4 hectares. The high ecological value of the meadow orchards is reflected in a large number of insects, birds and rodents. They are breeding grounds, food source and retreat all at the same time. Many different types of plants can also be found here. The fruit trees are specimens of old, robust and resistant varieties. They also survive longer periods of drought and are therefore better prepared for the changing climate.

Some of these trees have a cage around the trunk. It protects the young trees from being bitten by deer and rabbits, which like to nibble on the fresh bark. It also protects against sheep, which are used here as lawn mowers.

By the way, snacking is allowed, but only in small quantities and please be careful where you step.

Tradition and the thriving life: orchards are an extensive form of fruit growing. Most orchards have trees with very different - and often very old - types of fruit. A total of 3,000 types of fruit can be found there, which offer a valuable habitat for more than 5,000 animal and plant species.
