St. Paul's Cathedral, Esslingen am Neckar
St. Paul's Cathedral, a former Dominican monastery, is considered the oldest surviving mendicant order church in Germany.
    Description
The Dominicans began construction in 1233, and the church was consecrated by the famous scholar and bishop Albertus Magnus in 1268. Today it is a beautiful and early example of Gothic architecture in the Neckar region. The buildings of this church order were characterized by their simplicity. Only a bell in the modest wooden roof turret called the monks to prayer. There is no transept to separate the choir and nave.
After the Reformation, the simple room was used as a warehouse and stable. In the middle of the 19th century, the former Dominican cathedral returned to the possession of the Catholic community. The late Gothic crucifix and the Madonna on the crescent moon are part of the beautiful furnishings. The sculptor Ulrich Rückriem redesigned the chancel in 1994.
The stained glass windows in the choir are much younger. They date from 1961. Right next to them is the idyllic little monastery garden - an oasis of peace.

The atmosphere in Esslingen is of course always worth a trip. Better, of course, when the restrictions are a thing of the past and the catering is available again.
