In the cemetery, the "speaking" gravestones tell the life stories of the Föhr whalers and captains.
September 3, 2022
Regular church services and concerts as well as church and cemetery tours and the talking gravestones make the Süderender St. Laurentii Church from the 13th century an attractive destination.
The imposing building often hosts small concerts that sell out quickly. In the associated cemetery, the "talking" gravestones tell the life stories of the Föhr whalers and captains, one of the most famous of whom was probably "Lucky Matthias". The long history of the St. Laurentii Church goes far back into the Middle Ages. The remains of the first Romanesque church and the jambs made of heavy boulder granite can still be seen on the outer walls today. foehr.de/st-laurentii-kirche-in-suederende

The speaking tombstones from Föhr, also known as narrative tombstones, are located in the cemeteries of the St. Laurentii Church in Süderende, the St. Johannes Church in Nieblum and the St. Nikolai Church in Boldixum (today a district of Wyk auf Föhr). Similar objects can be found on the neighboring island of Amrum. They are all listed buildings. Their inscriptions report on the family and professional life, as well as on special events in the lives and honorary positions of the deceased. With 265 grave slabs and gravestones, the St. Johannis cemetery has the largest inventory of historically valuable gravestones.
