Castle Crag Summit

Castle Crag Summit

It may be the

smallest of all the 214 Wainwright Fells of the Lake District, but adventures

on Castle Crag are just as good as those on higher objectives. The fell’s name

is derived from its striking appearance, rising above a wooded patch of

Borrowdale like a great fortress. From its ramparts are superb views north over

Derwent Water towards the Vale of Keswick and noble Skiddaw, as well as south,

deep into Borrowdale.

Castle Crag provides a brilliant vantage point of the surrounding area. A long way off being a classed as a 'big peak', the ascent and descent can still be difficult. However, it is worth it to take some time at the top and admire fine views in all directions.

Castle Crag is known for people thinking they have reached the summit, when they feel the top os just ahead, you get there and realise theres another 40 or 50 feet.

Legendary fell walker and author Alfred Wainwright said: “If a visitor to Lakeland has only two or three hours to spare, poor fellow, yet desperately wants to reach a summit and take back an enduring memory of the beauty of the district.....let him climb Castle Crag." I think Wainwright sums it up perfectly here. Well worth a visit.
