The Cancano lakes are two artificial basins fed by the waters of the Adda river that rises on the nearby Monte Ferro. The closest is the Cancano lake and, further west, is the San Giacomo lake. The imposing dams that contain them were completed in 1950 and 1956 respectively. The tour of the Cancano lakes is one of the most evocative itineraries in Alta Valtellina.

The current dam was built later in 1956 following the growing demand for electricity.
