Julius Otto Monument

The Julius Otto Bund, founded in Dresden in 1876, was named after Otto, and in the early days it was heavily influenced by Hugo Richard Jüngst. In the Strehlen district, a Julius-Otto-Straße was named in 1890.

A monument by Gustav Kietz that showed Julius Otto and was inaugurated in front of the Kreuzschule on Georgplatz in 1886 was melted down in 1942 for war purposes. A copy based on preserved plaster casts and interpreted by Niklas Klotz has been standing on the square between the Dresden Kreuzkirche and the NH Hotel on Dresden's Altmarkt since August 2010.

Another memorial is located in front of the city pharmacy in Otto's birthplace Königstein.

Ernst Julius Otto was an important musician who directed the Dresden Kreuzchor from 1828 to 1875. The original monument was unveiled in front of the former Kreuzschule on Georgplatz in 1886. Gustav Kietz was a student of the sculptor Ernst Rietschel. In 1942, the bronze parts of the monument were melted down for military purposes. The plaster casts were preserved, were recovered in 1945 and treated for conservation in the 1980s.
