The Schleimünder Lighthouse, landmark of the pilot island and important beacon for the entrance to the Schlei, stands since 1871 on the then newly built Nordmole. He replaced the smaller predecessor that had been built in the same place ten years earlier. The almost 15-meter-high tower was built of yellow bricks and initially carried a lantern with petroleum burner and belt lens of 400 mm focal length. The red light was already 12 nautical miles visible. The lens is still in use today, but the light now produces a 500 watt halogen lamp.
