Arminius, the Cherusker - Hermann in German - was a Germanic general who brought the overwhelming Roman occupying power to its knees at the Varus Battle. The name of the battle comes from the then Roman governor Publius Quinctilius Varus, who led the Roman troops into the costly battle. Due to the Germanic victory, the Romans withdrew permanently behind the Limes and the Rhine.
The huge copper statue was created by the sculptor Ernst von Bandel, who saw Hermann as his life's work.
You can climb up the base of the statue and below Hermann's feet is a wrap-around viewing platform from which you can enjoy a great view of the Teutoburg Forest.
