The Oberbaum Bridge is a historic double-decker bridge and the landmark of Berlin's Friedrichshain district. The bridge was built in 1896. Pedestrians and motorists use the lower level. The subway runs on the upper level. The bridge connects Friedrichshain with Kreuzberg. The name Oberbaum refers to the former customs border.
The Spree was blocked on both sides with walkable wooden walkways, except for a narrow passage in the middle, in order to collect customs duties. At night, the passage was closed with a thick log armed with iron nails, the so-called Baum (tree).
