The excavator has rolled on. Here at Greven Anglerheim, too, a section of the Ems is being renatured. The Ems is up to 9 m deeper here than the actual floodplains were before the Ems was forced into its current bed by humans.

The Ems has "flowed" this deep into the soft sandy soil because the flow speed has been increased significantly by the canalization of the Ems.

Now the excavator has started to remove the stony bank reinforcement and to flatten the high banks. In this way, the river can create its own bed again and form a new bank landscape with sandy slopes and meanders.

I am curious how long it will take. In any case, I'll go and see it more often.

Update 9/7/19: The rigid river bed has been broken up further towards the A1 bridge. Everything still looks like a huge sandpit. But the Ems will conquer it again.

Update June 27th, 2020: Tree trunks were anchored in the river bed in order to direct the surge and flow direction of the Ems. The river can now largely design its new bed itself and recapture a piece of the Emsaue.

Update 12/29/2020: The work has been completed. The new river bed of the Ems is now much wider, the extremely high banks have been flattened so that the Ems can now form sand slopes and meanders itself again.

Sand martins and the kingfisher can breed on the sandy slopes. A great benefit for nature.

What was screwed up in the 30s of the last century was repaired with great effort. In the past, the straightening of the Ems meant that the flow speed of the Ems increased and so the river dug itself deeper and deeper.

Also worth seeing from the other side.
