After the border was drawn between Italy and Yugoslavia in 1947, the Goriška region was separated by a heavily guarded border. In the early 1950s, the Yugoslav People's Army built standardized watchtowers for border surveillance, which were used until Slovenia's independence in 1991.
Each tower was manned by a border guard ("Graničar"), whose task was to report and prevent escape attempts. The mostly young soldiers came from various republics of the former Yugoslavia.
