The 8 August Bridge is one of the fundamental road axes between the city of Gorizia and the Isonzo area. Its name recalls an extremely symbolic date for the city. On 8 August 1916 the 28th Infantry Regiment of the Pavia Brigade, commanded by second lieutenant Aurelio Baruzzi, reconquered the city after the retreat of the Austro-Hungarian army. It was the first tangible victory achieved after almost 15 months of war.

A short distance from the 8th August Bridge, intended for vehicular traffic, stands parallel the Railway Bridge over the Isonzo, an imposing structure characterized by stone support pillars and steel beams which extends for over 200 meters and which played a crucial role in connection of the railway networks between Gorizia and Nova Gorica.

1916 was the second year of the war for Italy and, in the wider European context, the year began in a climate of great uncertainty. Neither contender had succeeded in dealing a decisive blow to their opponent, nor had any real coordination of efforts been achieved between the opposing Allied nations.

The capture of Gorizia was a goal long held by the Italian High Command and one that seemed easy to achieve.

In the first months of the year, the Germans had launched their massive operation at Verdun, which had consumed enormous quantities of men and material and prompted French demands for local offensives to relieve the Allies. The Italians had complied with the demands with the Fifth Battle of the Isonzo, an operation conducted without any strategic objectives other than the engagement of the opposing forces and had produced no significant results.

The Austro-Hungarians, for their part, responded with the fearsome “Strafe Expedition”, a punitive expedition designed to break through the Trentino front and clear the way to the plain, thus encircling the bulk of our army in Veneto.
