  • The thickest chestnuts in the whole region can be found in Königstein. Six monster chestnuts lie in an open meadow between Mammolshain and Neuenhain. Wood sculptor Peter Meier designed it as seating, as if it had accidentally fallen from a nearby sweet chestnut. So naturally invited to settle down, the visitor can enjoy the wide view of Frankfurt from here.
The noble chestnuts are relics of the groves of the same name that existed in many villages in the Vordertaunus 200 to 250 years ago. The beech family came to the regions north of the Alps as sweet chestnuts as early as Roman times. In winter they were an important food. People used to bake “sweet bread” for the winter from the high-calorie, vitamin-rich fruits of Castanea sativa. In contrast to the fruit harvested in summer, the chestnuts ripened late and lasted well into the cold months. Chestnuts are still considered a delicacy today and can be used to make soup and chestnut bread.
The deciduous tree grows up to 30 meters high and very old. The sweet chestnut looks particularly attractive when it is in bloom (May to June). But man didn't just know how to use the fruits. The trunks of these trees were so coveted that they often ended up at auction. Skilled craftsmen made and still make furniture, fences and vineyard posts from the weather-resistant wood.
The sculptor Peter Meier shaped the six blocks of wood designed for the "City View" entirely according to nature. Nevertheless, the curves, peaks and hollows are arranged in such a way that up to two people can always sit down on the giant fruits.
