The stone gate is one of the landmarks of Wittenberge. It was first mentioned in 1297 in connection with a report of an attack by knights from Mecklenburg. Eventually it burned down in an attack and was rebuilt around 1450. Since then, the gate has survived, making it the oldest building in the city.

It is the oldest building in Wittenberg's old town. It was built in the middle of the 13th century and was used as a prison for a long time until 1926 when it became a museum of home and city history.

Nice photo opportunity. Such "tower gates" can be seen in some cities in the area, e.g. also in Salzwedel.
