Start of the historic city tour, built in 1546. The new town hall had several functions: market hall under the open arcades, council hall, event venue and warehouse. Badly damaged during World War II, it was restored in 1950 with the help of Erkelenz citizens.

A beautiful old building in the middle of the city is still being renovated.

The old town hall forms a prominent point in the medieval cityscape. As an expression of the self-confidence of the citizens, it was built in the late Gothic style in 1546 after a previous building was destroyed by the great city fire on June 21, 1540.

The old town hall is called a gem of brick Gothic on the Lower Rhine. The simple brick building is very impressive due to its harmonious proportions with Gothic pointed arches that rest on square pillars, the flat arch panels over the upper floor windows and the steeply towering hipped roof. The town hall was originally built with a completely open ground floor hall that served as a market hall. In 1756 the town hall was rebuilt and the arches were bricked up. Probably the crenellated crown and the corner turret were demolished at the same time. The year above the front door comes from this renovation.
