A legend tells of Roland, Charlemagne's vassal. When news reached him after a battle in Spain that Roland had fallen, his beloved, Hildegunde, fled to the Nonnenwerth Monastery. Roland survived and, upon his return, built a hermitage on the hill, from where he gazed down at the monastery day in and day out, mourning. This story also touched Konrad Adenauer, who became engaged here.
