The church was finished in 1503. Until the Reformation it was called Willihardus Church after the Frisian missionary and later Bishop Willehard. Afterwards it was consecrated to the Trinity (unity of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit) and called the Trinity Church. In 1592 an extension was added. This has given it the angular shape. The church was restored in 1883 for the 400th birthday of Martin Luther; a comprehensive renovation took place in 1964 under the direction of the church and art painter Hermann Wehrmann from Glückstadt. The church was last restored on the occasion of its 500th birthday in 2003.
To the west of the church is the octagonal wooden bell tower. It dates from 1817 and is 29 m high. Other towers had stood there before. The first was built for the 100th anniversary of the church and was almost 60 meters high; In 1648 he fell victim to a storm. Last renovated in 1993/94 for approx. 37,000 DM. It will be repainted in spring 2020.
