The Marienkirche is located in the city center, on the church square. There is no concrete information about the origin of the Marienkirche, but it has been proven that it must have existed as early as 1237. In a major fire in 1665, the church fell victim to the flames. In 1666 the church was largely rebuilt. In 1879 the Ladegast organ was installed.

In the recent past, 1987 - 1989, the upper part of the church tower was demolished and rebuilt. The approx. 30m high, late Gothic square church tower with its eight-sided crown has become a symbol of the city.

The valuable Ladegast organ was extensively restored in 1992/93. In the years 1990 to 1997 the entire renovation of the church, the church roof and in 1999 the renewal of the entire church square took place.

The belfry of the church bell was renovated in 2008.
