Hiking
The Hauptmarkt of Trier is the central square and one of the largest in the city.
It is located in the historic city center, directly in front of the cathedral, in the current Mitte/Gartenfeld district. The most important city business streets meet here.
In 958, Archbishop Heinrich I endowed the Hauptmarkt with the market cross as a symbol of sovereignty.
The Hauptmarkt was a place for selling and trading goods in the medieval city.

Hiking
The Petrusbrunnen on the Hauptmarkt dates back to 1595 and was created by the sculptor Hans Ruprecht Hoffmann. On the hexagonal trough stands Saint Peter, the patron saint of the city, and below him the four cardinal virtues: justice, fortitude, temperance, and wisdom. The figures on the fountain are copies: the originals were placed in the care of the city museum, and the copies are painted in color as they were at the time of their creation, whereas the originals are now stone-colored.
