Anyone lucky enough to cycle through Brandenburg an der Havel should pause for a moment on the bank – where the water puffs through the city lock like an old coachman after a steep climb. Today's lock is no longer an industrial colossus, but a delicate stage for pleasure boats, paddlers, and excursion steamers, gliding at a leisurely pace from the upper water to the lower water. A bit like retirement for a structure that once wrestled with cargo ships.
