The Biosphere Reserve Vessertal-Thüringer Wald is located in the middle of the Thuringian Forest Nature Park. The reserve extends far beyond the boundaries of the name giving Vessertals and covers a total of 17,000ha. Already in 1979 it was recognized by the UNESCO as a Bioreservat and "if everything goes well, it will soon be even bigger!", Shines Elke Hellmut of the administration of the biosphere reserve.
