The ancient walls of the medina of Vélez-Málaga, dating mainly from the Moorish period (13th-15th centuries), are fortified remains that once surrounded the old Muslim city, the present-day Villa district. These walls, built of rammed earth, lime, and brick, formed the first line of defense for the citadel.
