The Goslar market church, first mentioned in a document in 1151, was built using the no longer existing cathedral as a model. Its original form was a three-aisled, cross-shaped pillar basilica with two west towers. In the 14th and 15th centuries, its chancel was enlarged and a new nave was added on each side.

The market church of St. Cosmas and Damian is the council church and main Protestant parish church of the city of Goslar.
