Sundsvall is home to one campus of the Central Swedish University (Mittuniversitetet), with the other located in Östersund. The university was formed in 1993 through the merger of the University of Östersund and the University of Sundsvall/Härnösand, both founded in 1977. At its peak, Mittuniversitetet was the ninth largest university in Sweden, with 1,530 full-time students.
