The meadow to the left of the Kwachtloop was used as a fortification by residents of the hamlets of 't Gebergte and Heikant in the 17th and 18th centuries. The irregular square shape is still clearly visible between the moats. Meerhout had no fewer than eight fortifications during the turbulent 17th century. One war flowed seamlessly into the next. Residents were constantly forced to fortify themselves in lower-lying, water-surrounded mini-villages for protection against roving armies of undisciplined scoundrels. The Heikant fortification was very effective due to its location in a marshy area. The oldest mention dates from 1683.
