At the beginning of the 19th century, around 20 families in Hohwacht were still able to make a living from fishing. The catch, primarily eel, herring, and flounder, was marketed directly as far away as Kiel. Everyday goods were transported on the return journey. The originals of today's fishermen's huts existed until the late 1960s. They were mostly flat-roofed structures with black tar, in which the fishermen even lived during the summer months.

The huts were later remodeled. The shallow shoreline had become too shallow even for small boats and eventually became more suitable for swimming than for landing fish. Today, the main fishing activity is only from the Lippe River, two kilometers north of Hohwacht. Here, the Grosser Binnensee and the Kossau River drain into the Baltic Sea, forming a sheltered harbor that was developed into a marina in the 1970s. Lippe belongs to the Waterneverstorf estate.
