The Cementerio Municipal de Mompox (also known as the Cemetery of San Francisco Javier) is considered one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Colombia and is part of the city's UNESCO World Heritage site.
The cemetery is characterized by
its bright white graves, mausoleums, and statues, which give the place a peaceful, almost heavenly atmosphere.
Entrance Arch: Above the arch, the inscription “Aquí confina la vida con la eternidad" (Here life borders eternity) can be read.
It was built in the 1830s
to relocate burials from the churches to a central, more hygienic area.

Dozens of cats roam among the graves and are often referred to as the "guardians of the cemetery" or "cat protectors of the souls".
This circumstance has earned the place the nickname "Cemetery of the Living Cats".
Opening hours: The cemetery is usually accessible daily from 07:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 17:00 for visitors.
A visit at dusk, when locals light candles at the graves, is particularly atmospheric.
