The monument is the Piedra de Bolívar. It is located on the banks of the Río Magdalena and documents the arrival and departure dates of the South American liberator Simón Bolívar during his numerous visits to the city.
Mompox played a central role in the Colombian struggle for independence. In 1812, Bolívar recruited around 400 soldiers here for his "Admirable Campaign", which eventually led to the liberation of Caracas. Because of this support, Bolívar is often quoted as saying:
"If I owe my life to Caracas, I owe my glory to Mompox."
