The church was originally founded in 1544 by Dominican monks. It was one of the first churches in Mompox.
The original structure
made of straw collapsed on August 19, 1845, and was almost completely rebuilt with bricks in 1856.
It is considered an outstanding
example of Spanish colonial style, combined with elements of the Mudéjar and Baroque styles. Particularly striking are its facade in white and ochre yellow, as well as the offset bell tower.
