The statue marks the spot where Nelson Mandela delivered his first speech as a free man on February 11, 1990.
This 1.95-meter-tall statue, created by sculptors Xhanti Mpakama and Barry Jackson, commemorates Mandela's contribution to South African democracy.
Visitors will find the statue on the balcony of Cape Town City Hall, overlooking the Grand Parade.
The statue features the detail of a pair of borrowed glasses, as Mandela had to use his wife Winnie's during his first public speech.

Built in 1905, City Hall is a historic location par excellence.
It was the first place, in 1990, where Nelson Mandela addressed a jubilant crowd of over 10,000 just hours after his release. He had to borrow his wife's reading glasses after leaving his own in prison. His speech began with the words: "Comrades and fellow South Africans, I greet you all in the name of peace, democracy, and freedom. I stand before you not as a prophet, but as a humble servant of you, the people."
