The most important sight in this district is the Gleuel moated castle in the center of the town, surrounded by a beautiful park. The oldest part of the Baroque complex is the southwest wing, facing the park, with its curved stepped gable. The taller wing, facing the castle courtyard, was added to the older southwest wing by the then new owner, Johann von Cöllen, according to a date in the gable apex in 1632.

In 1976, the family of architect Ulrich Ahlert acquired the property and has since had the main house extensively restored and the outer bailey largely rebuilt.

In 1982, a small stage was installed in the northeastern half-timbered barn, which is used for open-air theater performances and concerts in the summer. Adjoining the castle to the southwest, separated from it only by a moat, was the Gleuel manorial farm, of which the 17th-century gatehouse still stands on Bachemer Straße.

In late Franconian times, in a document dated June 4, 898, the king of the Lotharingian empire, Zwentibold, donated a salhof in Gleuel (Gloulo) with 12 other hooves and the church, as well as goods in Selstena (Sielsdorf) to the Essen Monastery. This speaks both for the old age of the castle courtyard and for the church. The castle and the town came into the possession of the cathedral in the middle of the 13th century. The lieutenant Gerard von Gleuele fought with the Cologne against the Archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden in 1260.

The baroque manor house of the castle was built in its present form in 1632. At that time, the Cologne councilor and merchant Johann von Cöllen had the wing, with the gable facing the courtyard, rebuilt (inscription on the gable tip SOLI DEO GRATIA 1632). The lower south-west wing facing the castle park with its curved stepped gable is significantly older. Before the addition it probably stood alone and had two stepped gables on either side. On the ground floor of the new wing from 1632 is the so-called knight's hall with a Cologne ceiling from 1682. The wall painting, which is only rarely preserved in this way and is therefore particularly valuable, dates from the 19th century. Gleuel Castle has always been a fief of the Cologne cathedral chapter. With the secularization in 1802, it passed into the hands of the bourgeoisie. In 1976 the moated castle was acquired by the architect Ulrich Ahlert, who has since extensively restored it and largely rebuilt the outer bailey based on the old layout. There is a small, private car museum in one wing of the outer bailey. Surrounded by a moat, the castle is situated in a beautiful park that is freely accessible.

Cute little water castle. Get ice cream at one of the two ice cream parlors and then enjoy it in the park.

The image shows Gleuel Castle in Hürth, one of the oldest moated castles in the medieval Cologne region.

The castle is located in the district of Gleuel, which shares the same name.

It is one of the few castles in the area that are still standing.

The castle itself is not open to the public, but there is a car museum and an open-air theater, which can be accessed by appointment or during events.

The castle is a popular destination for hikes and walking trails in the region.
