A large, modern coking plant was commissioned in 1952 at Shaft 1 of the Graf Bismarck Colliery and operated until 1973. A spherical tank was built in 1956 on the north side of the Rhine-Herne Canal for the temporary storage of the coke oven gas produced. After the coking plant closed, it became the property of the Gelsenkirchen municipal utilities. Following the demolition of virtually all parts of the Graf Bismarck Colliery in 1967/68, this tank assumed an important role as an industrial monument.
