With its coordinates and markings (stabilization in the terrain), it forms an essential basis for geodesy and cartography. Surveyors involved in triangulation were formerly known as trigonometers.
On topographic maps, TPs are marked as small triangles. In the field, such points serve for geodetic follow-up measurements, their precise orientation, and as fixed points for local surveys.
