Neustrelitz Castle, built between 1726 and 1731 as the first building of the later residential city of Neustrelitz, was the main residence of the ruling dukes and grand dukes of Mecklenburg-Strelitz from 1731 until the end of the monarchy.
The construction of a settlement for the court and state administration near the castle was followed in 1733 by the duke's call for new citizens to settle there.
This document is now considered the founding document of the city of Neustrelitz.
