It is believed that the karst cave was first settled by a hermit named Volkmar in 950. His followers, known as the Volkmar Brothers, later joined forces with the Cistercians. In the 12th century, the Cistercians built a small monastery directly above the cave and named it "Michaelstein" after their patron saint. During this time, the cave was converted into a cave church.
