The parish church of St. Michael in Brixen is only separated from the much better-known Brixen Cathedral by the old cemetery. The predecessor of today's St. Michael's Church, a rectangular church building with a round apse from the Ottonian period, was consecrated in 1038.
Today's church building is a relatively simple late Gothic construction, but the interior was radically rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1757 and 58. Ceiling frescoes by Joseph Hautzinger from Vienna decorate the vault, the painting on the high altar is by the Jesuit and painter Andrea Pozzo and the angel figures next to the altar are by Johann Perger.

This Brixen church was consecrated to the Archangel Michael. The name (coming from Hebrew) means "Who is like God?". He is often depicted - on paintings or as a statue - with a flaming sword, and occasionally a lance. Michael is - together with Raphael, Gabriel and Uriel - one of the four archangels who (according to human imagination) occupy the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the saints calendar is September 29th.
