    Apartments in the Vault:
The vault was mentioned in archives as early as 1406. Resting on two large barrel vaults, the half-timbered house stands above the Grube, one of the oldest artificial waterways in Northern Germany, directly opposite the Old Harbor. Originally, the vault was part of the former fortifications, the city wall, with a public passageway.

In 1660, the "newly built vault by the water" is mentioned. The foremen of the Ratskeller, the so-called wine lords, tested the wine arriving by ship here. In 1664, the "upper lodging by the water" was leased to the Ratskeller tenant by contract, with permission to seat guests there and to serve wine and other beers.

Joachim Wesenberg's "eel and fish smokehouse" was located here from 1864 onwards, and fish was sold in the shop until 1991.

After the fall of communism in 1989, the extensive renovation of the vault was completed in July 2004. Among its treasures is the original Renaissance painting on the pit side.

The iron oxide red paint corresponds to the oldest remains dating back to the second half of the 17th century.

The interior of the building was designed with respect for the medieval structure and great attention to detail. Hardly any floor is completely horizontal, the windows had to be crooked, and original beams crisscross the rooms.
