The swan statue in front of Doberan Minster in Bad Doberan is a symbolic monument commemorating the town's founding legend. According to legend, Prince Heinrich Borwin I killed a stag while hunting in 1186 – but the marshy terrain raised doubts about the site for a new monastery. At that moment, a swan flew out of the reeds and called "dobre, dobre" (Slavic for "good, good"), which was interpreted as a good omen. This gave rise to the name Doberan – "good place."

It's lovely to walk through the stream garden. Parts of it are quite overgrown. The northeast corner is the most beautiful, where the reeds sway in the marsh, creating wonderful backlit photographs.
