The courtyard was not an original part of the fortress; it was uncovered during the expansion of the fortress's capacity when the number of prisoners in the fortress had already become unbearable. Due to the large number of prisoners crammed into the cells and the solitary confinement, the courtyard was considered the worst. After the war, it served as an internment camp for Germans.
