The small Vöppstedter village church was built in the 12th century, it is ring-shaped by the historic Vöppstedter cemetery, which has not been used since 1886.

Over the years, the condition of the building deteriorated so much that a large area had to be cordoned off. It was not until the years after 1960 that the administration of the city of Salzgitter decided to convert the cemetery and the chapel as a park-like memorial for the victims of the two world wars and the tyranny, or to secure the chapel ruin in accordance with a listed building. After 1980 a memorial plaque for victims of the mine disaster was put up in the Hanoverian Treue.
