The area includes a section of the south-west edge of the Ziegelroda red sandstone plateau. In the area of the steep slope, part of the Middle, but mainly Lower Buntsandstein is emerging. Solid dolomite sandstone banks are characteristic of the Lower Buntsandstein. Together with blown-in loess, it causes the basic reaction of the soil. The rock walls visible from afar are the remains of old quarries and are a geotope worth protecting.
