A superb descent (or climb, in which case there's some significant leg work ahead of you!) to/from Battersby Plantation down below.

This used to be a railway track, built in the 1860s, to connect Battersby Junction with Rosedale ironstone mines - an impressive feat of engineering given its steep gradient!

The old railway line has a 700ft steep climb at the start but then it mainly flat fast gravel till it comes out at the lion inn pub hotel above rosedale. its a great stop for walkers cyclists and people camping.

Very tough climb. The first section is just about ride-able with some strong legs until you reach a gate. Having passed through this getting going again is almost impossible, however, it's worth pushing to the top for a fantastic view across Yorkshire and some brilliant gravel riding.
