Mariahout is a reclamation village. Since 1920, the wastelands in the northwest of Lieshout have been reclaimed on a massive scale. The establishment of many new farms, together with the existing hamlets, formed the basis for a new village community. Before the town was founded, it was a heathland, to which the name Ginderdoor was attached. A chapel stood in this hamlet in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was dedicated to Anthony Abbot. It was demolished shortly after 1803.

On September 11, 1999, an earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale was recorded near this village. This was possibly related to the Peelrand fault.
