The National Basilica of the Sacred Heart, also known as the Basilica of Koekelberg, is an impressive building in Brussels. It is the largest Art Deco building in the world and a major landmark for the people of Brussels. Construction began in 1905 and was completed in 1970. The basilica is made of brick, concrete and stone, and has a dome that rises 90 metres above the Koekelberg.
Inside the basilica, you will find a very large space with walls covered in golden terracotta. A striking feature is the ciborium (the roof) of the main altar, with a crucifix and four bronze angels by Harry Elström. The basilica also offers a beautiful panorama from the dome, where you have a great view of Brussels.
The basilica was built in honour of the 75th anniversary of Belgian independence and was an initiative of King Leopold II, who was inspired by the Sacré-Cœur in Paris.
