Hammelburg was first mentioned in 716 in the late Merovingian period. The place, which was then called hamulo castellum, belonged to the fiefdom of the Thuringian Duke Heden II.
On January 7, 777, Charlemagne donated the Hammelburg fiscus with all of its goods and possessions - except for St. Martin's Church, which had belonged to the diocese of Würzburg since 741 - to the Fulda monastery, which had been founded by Sturmius in 744. The Fulda Cross in Hammelburg's city coat of arms still bears witness to this important era, which lasted over 1000 years until 1802.
