The year was 777 AD when Charlemagne donated his Frankish possessions “ad hamulo castellum” including the surrounding towns to the newly founded Fulda monastery. The special thing about it: this parchment contains written records of vineyards in Franconia for the first time. It is not known where the vineyards were located and how much area the donation covered. But the facilities must have been so important that the handover was recorded in writing.

In fact, Hammelburg is even older. The first mention comes from the year 716 AD. Hammelburg is the second oldest settlement in all of Lower Franconia.

Hammelburg is a former district town that has belonged to the Bad Kissingen district since the administrative reform.

The town is probably one of the oldest settlements in Germany.

It was first mentioned in documents as early as the Merovingian period, but the settlement is probably much older.

In 777 Charlemagne gave Hammelburg to the Fulda monastery.

The deed of donation also mentions vineyards that have now passed to the Fulda monastery.

No other city in Lower Franconia can show an older original document.

That is why Hammelburg is known as the "oldest wine town in Franconia".

Particularly interesting places in the city are the market fountain from the Renaissance and the baroque so-called cellar castle from the time of the prince abbots / bishops of Fulda. From the castle terrace on the Saale-Aue side there is a beautiful view over to Saaleck Castle.
