A beautiful city, partly historic. The old city towers are well preserved, and one of them is open to the public with a viewing platform. The beautifully landscaped museum island is also worth mentioning.

The year was 777 AD when Charlemagne gifted his Frankish holdings "ad hamulo castellum," along with the surrounding villages, to the newly founded Fulda Abbey. What makes this special is that this parchment contains the first written record of vineyards in Franconia. The exact location of the vineyards and the size of the donated area are not known. However, the vineyards must have been significant enough to warrant a written document.

In fact, Hammelburg is even older. It was first mentioned in 716 AD, making it the second oldest settlement in all of Lower Franconia.

Hammelburg is a former district town that has belonged to the Bad Kissingen district since the administrative reform.

The town is probably one of the oldest settlements in Germany.

It was first documented as early as the Merovingian period, but the settlement is likely considerably older.

In 777, Charlemagne gifted Hammelburg to Fulda Abbey.

The deed of gift also mentions vineyards that were then given to Fulda Abbey.

No other town in Lower Franconia can boast an older original document.

Therefore, Hammelburg is considered the "Oldest Wine Town of Franconia."
