Founded in 1394 by sailors who had encountered a storm while returning from England, it was dedicated to the assistance and protection of sailors and merchants. One of its members was Prince Henry the Navigator. This important confraternity performed banking, commercial, and other functions and owned ships that not only belonged to the confraternity and provided services on its behalf, but also defended the coast from pirates when necessary.
